Frequently asked questions.

Use:

All of my pottery is meant to be used, hopefully every day!  It can be washed in the dishwasher and go into the microwave.  As with all ceramics, some liquids like wine, tea, and coffee may build-up or stain over time when washed exclusively in the dishwasher (or at least my dishwasher).  If you don’t appreciate this “patina”, hand wash your mugs and cups occasionally.  All pieces can go into the freezer or the oven, but need to start at room temperature when doing either and never on the stovetop.

Safety:

All of my glazes and clays are lead free, durable and safe to use with food.

Process:

Making pottery is a labor of love!  Each piece starts out as a weighed-out lump of clay (high quality stoneware mixed locally) and is either wheel thrown or slab built in my home studio.  I create each piece individually or often in small batches of 4-20.  After a piece is made it is allowed to dry for several hours or overnight before it is trimmed, sometimes carved or decorated with underglaze, signed and left to dry completely. Once absolutely dry, the pot is fired once in my electric kiln (lovingly named “Baby”) to Cone 04 (1945 F/1062 C). It takes 18-24 hours for Baby to heat all the way up and cool back down. Now in a fragile yet solid bisque state, the pot is dipped or painted with glazes in multiple layers, drying completely between each glaze application.. I mix all of my own glazes from scratch (think baking but with an N95 mask on).  Once glazing is complete, It takes another 24 hours for Baby to fire the piece again to the hotter Cone 6 (2232 F/ 1222 C) and cool slowly cool in order to enhance the formation of the glaze surface.  After the final firing, each piece is inspected and the bottoms and glaze drips are sanded smooth.
